Current Support Within Northern Ireland

Learning that you have lost, or will lose a pregnancy or baby, or the loss of a child before, during or after birth, can be a confusing and profoundly distressing time for many parents.


It is important to know that in addition to services provided by your Trust, support for families bereaved through pregnancy or baby loss is still available.


The following charities/ support groups can offer online advice, information and support:

  • Bereaved NI

    In March 2024 Health Minister Robin Swann launched a new bereavement support website for Northern Ireland. The website provides a range of accessible resources for people who are experiencing bereavement and ensure that they have the required information and support for each stage of their bereavement journey.

  • Baby Loss Awareness Week

    The Baby Loss Awareness Week Alliance are committed to raising awareness of pregnancy and baby loss, providing support to anyone affected by pregnancy loss and the death of a baby, working with health professionals and services to improve bereavement care, and reducing preventable deaths.

  • The Miscarriage Association

  • The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust

    A registered national charity, established to meet the needs of people who have experienced ectopic pregnancy and the health care professionals who care for them.  The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust believes that the deaths and trauma associated with ectopic pregnancy should be prevented and seeks to both relieve the distress associated with it and provide ongoing support.

  • Sands

    Sands provide support for bereaved parents and their families when their baby dies, before, during or soon after birth as well as information and support for healthcare professionals.

  • Tommy’s

    Funds medical research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth and provides information on having a healthy baby.  Raises awareness of the facts and provides free, accurate and up-to-date information for medical professionals and parents-to-be.  This includes a dedicated telephone midwife service, a comprehensive website and free books and leaflets dedicated to promoting health in pregnancy and pre-pregnancy.

  • The Compassionate Friends

    An organisation of bereaved parents and their families offering understanding, support and encouragement to others after the death of a child or children.

    The UK’s leading baby charity working to prevent sudden deaths and promote health.     Cruse Bereavement Care offers free support for people bereaved by death, in any way, whatever their age, nationality or belief.  Help includes 1-to-1 bereavement support, bereavement support groups and advice or information on practical matters and a helpline.

  • CRADLE

    CRADLE Charity is a national pregnancy loss charity working with Healthcare Professionals within the NHS, to support their pregnancy loss services. 

    Their national team of volunteers and corporate partners donate CRADLE Comfort Bags to more than 45 NHS hospitals, these are filled with essential toiletries made available to women or couples receiving care, during or following pregnancy loss.

  • Arc Antenatal

    ARC offers non-directive information and support to parents before, during and after antenatal screening; when they are told their baby has an anomaly; when they are making difficult decisions about continuing with or ending a pregnancy, and when they are coping with complex and painful issues after making a decision, including bereavement.  We’re here for as long as you need us. ARC’s helpline is answered by trained staff Monday to Friday, 10.00am-5.30pm.

    TAMBA Bereavement Support Group is for parents who have lost a twin/multiple or both/all twins/multiples. The support Group offers parent to parent support via their befriending service and via their closed face book bereavement support group.

  • Tiny Life

    TinyLife, (Formerly NIMBA) Northern Ireland’s premature and vulnerable baby charity.   • Life After Loss

    Life After Loss is an online support community set up in November 2006 by bereaved mothers who find support and friendship through sharing their grief over the loss of a baby at any stage of pregnancy or after birth.

  • Informing Choices

  • Aching Arms

    Aching Arms bears to hospitals and hospices for midwives and nurses to offer to bereaved parents in their care. We also donate bears to baby loss support groups, funeral directors and to families who contact us via our website, email, Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Each bear is a comforter to hold, lets parents know they are not alone and directs parents to support agencies who can help in the devastating days, weeks, months and year after a baby loss. Their aim is to raise awareness of the impact of pregnancy and baby loss and bring some comfort to bereaved parents and their families after the loss of a baby.

  • Child Bereavement UK

    Child Bereavement UK helps families to rebuild their lives when a child grieves or when a child dies. We support children and young people (up to the age of 25) when someone important to them has died or is not expected to live, and parents and the wider family when a baby or child of any age dies or is dying. 

    We provide training to professionals in health and social care, education, and the voluntary and corporate sectors, equipping them to provide the best possible care to bereaved families.

  • The Child Death Helpline

    The Child Death Helpline is staffed by volunteers, all of them bereaved parents. All of our volunteers are trained, supervised and supported by professional teams within Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust and the Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust. The helpline is a partnership between professionals and parents working together to provide a professional service to anyone affected by the death of a child of any age.
